Yes! Swimmers have the right to wild swimming in Scotland, a right to roam. And Scotland is the most magical land to swim wild, with its abundance of lochs, waterfalls, rivers and coastline. It's a good idea to join a group or hire a wild swimming guide for safety.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer?

This depends on what type of wild swimming you are doing. If you are sea, river or distance swimming, then yes. If you are going for a dook in a shallow waterfall then not so much. You don't need to be an athlete but an ability to swim and confidence in the water is advisable.

How long should I swim  for?

This is dependent on many factors and can be different everyday. Over time you will acclimatise and be able to stay in longer. Always get out when you are still feeling good - don't stay in until you start to shiver. Read post swim advice here.

What do I need to know before wild swimming?

Wild swimming for beginners can be daunting and carries an element of risk. Never go alone, ensure you have had something light to eat, get out whilst you feel good and remove wet kit, dry off and layer up as soon as you exit the water. Better still, hire a wild swimming guide!
